Muscovey means turkey duck. They originated
from North America. They have no vocal cords, and
therefore cannot quack. Only the females can fly.
Their webbed feet have claws, so they can roost in trees at
night. The hens lay 3-4 times a year, hatching 8-25
eggs per sitting.
Muscoveys make great pets,
they socialize well with people as well as other pets such
as dogs and cats. They are great for pest control as
they love to eat bugs and slugs.
Muscoveys are not great
swimmers as their body contains very little oils, so their
meat is non-greasy and leaner than ham.
Muscoveys come in many colours other than solid
white. Hens can weigh an average of 5 lbs. and
drakes around 10 lbs. at 20 weeks of age. The
hens bravely protect their young and have been known
to ward off predators such as foxes, cats and dogs.
